"MAN DELIGHTS NOT ME..."

HAMLET: PRINCE OF DENMARK AT THE ONYX THEATRE, FEATURING KATRINA LARSEN AS HAMLET

Katrina Larsen's words come out a little slower these days, a little deeper, and with a frightening intensity that belie her 25 years. The artist that won the Best Actress award last year from Las Vegas Life magazine has made a reputation for herself in town playing ingénues, plucky gals-next door, and comediennes. These days, says director John Beane, you would barely recognize her.

"You should have seen her at the audition," said Beane, Insurgo's Artistic Director and director of the play. "She came in pale, rigid, eyes on fire, she was channeling something else. When she got to her monologue it was this other creature. Transformation. We're very excited."

This new Hamlet sees Larsen tackling the part that is arguably the greatest written, and usually reserved for men. The conceit of the show is that Hamlet is a princess in disguise to provide an heir to the throne.

Beane is quick to point out that the show is still 100% Hamlet.

"We've not added to the text at all. Fans of our Lysistrata may expect a massive reworking but we have taken the conceit of a female as the prince and let Shakespeare do the work. Lysistrata was essentially ripe for interpretation. This is entirely Hamlets journey, and we are traveling the road that Shakespeare wrote. With just this one adjustment." Though the script has been edited down - unedited versions clock in at over four hours - the production remains true to the play.

And some of the best actors in Las Vegas have come out to support the concept. Erik Amblad, Sean Critchfield, Brandon McClenahan, Tressa Bern and Johnny Miles are just a few of the local faces patrons will be seeing onstage.

"We are here to offer Las Vegas our particular vision and to create a sense of the possibility - the magic - that art and even religion used to provide" said Beane. "The response has been more than we hoped, and we want to invite the public to stay tuned. We have not yet begun to fight."
