Fresh off the
heels of its award-winning first full season of production, the Onyx
Theatre
and
resident acting ensemble Insurgo Theater Movement present a
celebratory fetishistic explosion of Elizabethan kink, bardolatry
and hysteria to raise funds for 2008-2009.
"Las Vegas has made it clear that they are seriously hungry for a
venue like the Onyx Theatre and for an ensemble like the Insurgo
Theater Movement," said John Beane, director of the Onyx and
Insurgo.
"We consider it a responsibility, then, to up the ante. We are
offering 14 mainstage productions for this season, including a
Second Stage series that begins this spring. Literally every major
alternative theatre company in town is represented this season or
has asked to be – we've invited Good Medicine Theatre, Cockroach
Theatre, Atlas Ensemble and others to join the season. We are even
bringing in two California companies to expose Vegas to some of the
other flavors out there."
Onyx and Insurgo will continue to produce at least 50% of the shows
in house, including three original works in 2008-2009. In addition,
Insurgo has contracted with a dozen major workshop leaders to offer
leading national and international theatrical training.
Several ongoing series are being added to the weekly/monthly lineup
that already includes Rocky Horror, SET Improv, and the Wayward Ways
Vaudeville Variety Show. In addition, the Onyx is hosting sketch
comedy sensations Feed The Monkey monthly, as well as the balls-out
standup comedy show Short Bus Comics (hosted by a serial killer)
every Friday at 11PM.
"And that's truly just the half of it," said Beane. "We are working
with groups like Starrpro and Cirque Du Soleil, developing
productions, hosting rehearsals, auditions, performance. Its about
getting these magic beasts up and flourishing. We have put together
a charitable scholarship drive for impoverished local theatre
students. Our ensemble members are creating new stagings of rare
scripts that we will be offering every month to the public…"
If it sounds ambitious, it is. But after months of reading about how
quickly most theatres in town fold, Onyx and Insurgo find themselves
topping the Las Vegas "Best Of" lists, and the phones do not stop
ringing. The "most unpredictable and daring theatre group in Las
Vegas" (Sun) is just getting warmed up...

professional alternative theatre alive.
